It is seldom anyone’s wish to be admitted to a hospital for any reason. Sometimes we go as patients, other times we go to visit our family and friends, and some people work there. Usually though in the case of patients, they would much rather be at home as opposed to the hospital, but are unable to receive the necessary care at home.
If you do have to stay at a hospital then you have probably been exposed to a hospital bed. Almost all hospitals utilize an adjustable hospital bed in order to facilitate patient comfort and allow the nurse to easily care for a patient. A hospital bed can make several adjustments. They typically can go straight up or down, which makes patient transfers much easier. In addition, these beds also allow for the head rest and foot rest to be adjusted.
Older hospital beds had utilized hand cranks to achieve these adjustments, but most now are controlled electronically by a remote control. These pieces of equipment are very important to providing comfort to the patient. They allow for the patient to sit up while in bed, so that they can safely eat. They also allow the patient to easily watch TV, read, and by elevating the feet and head slightly, it is possible to improve circulation and lung capacity.
These beds can also be purchased for residential settings, and many people use them in their homes. They can make it much easier on the caregiver, who in many residential settings is not a paid nurse, but a loved one.
Some of the medical benefits of an adjustable bed are listed below:
- Reduce swelling of the legs and other areas
- Reduce back pain
- Reduce shoulder and neck tension
- Reduce strain on joints, such as due to osteoarthritis
- Allow patients to easily be moved, to ensure that the bed can be changed and
they do not receive bed sores
